FEATURE: Pantone Releases Two Colors of the Year 2016
Congratulations! It’s a boy…and, a girl! For the first time ever, Pantone has released not one, but two colors for 2016 – Rose Quartz and Serenity. The color combo, shades of pale pink and baby blue have been dubbed harmonious colors that promote tranquility and peace.
Executive Director of Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman commented: “With the whole greater than its individual parts, joined together Serenity and Rose Quartz demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”
Eiseman continued, “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more multilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumers’ increased comfort with using color as a form of expression which includes a generation that is less concerned about being typecast or judged, and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”
The release of the Pantone color of the year is an event closely watched by the fashion industry as designers anticipate its release to include in their own designs. Retailers also keep a close eye as products such as home décor impact their own merchandise.
Pantone, owned by Danaher Corp., uses a system that helps manufacturers define color accurately. Each year Danaher Corp. polls décor and fashion designers, as well as manufacturers and retailers, as to what colors they plan to use in the year ahead.
The choice for next year reflects a surprising pastel trend most often seen on runways. Get ready to see a slew of styles in Rose Quartz and Serenity for Spring!
