FASHION & STYLE: SACAI RETHINKS NIKE’S CLASSIC PIECES FOR SPRING
Nike is not new to collaborating with innovative Japanese designers. In the past, the shoe developer and active wear connoisseur teamed up with Junya Watanabe to create Nike x Undercover: Gyakusou and Loopwheeler to create Nike Air Vortex “Fuwa Max.” Now the premier shoe brand joins with Chitose Abe to release a Nike x Sacai line consisting of eight women’s active wear pieces that brings her patented whimsical style to surface.
Launched in 1999, Abe’s cult-brand Sacai weaves together classic shapes with a sporty feel making her a worthy partner to Nike. Her innate understanding of fine material and texture has allowed her to explore invigorated forms with Nike’s iconic Tech Fleech and their newly developed mesh lace (lined under t-shirts).
Creative Director of Nike Sportswear and Vice President, Kurt Parker tells Business of Fashion that “many of her collections have inspired the design team at Nike through her elegant and graceful application of materials.”
Abe’s vision for the collection lies greatly on the original Nike styles that emphasizes the importance of utility and performance, which led her to dig through years of archives to bring back a definitive Nike feel.
She reworks silhouettes like the three-decade Windrunner nylon jacket by adding plissé-style paneling; a peplum is added to a hooded sweater with side openings. Naturally she adds her spin on the Nike Air Max and Dunks; the line includes a slip-on style with elastic tongues. The Air Max out-sole is decorated with a tromp l’oeil design, and the Dunks have a 20mm wedge.
“Nike is a classic and an original that has a purity about it and a familiarity to the silhouettes that they’ve created over the years, so it’s a perfect fit with my aesthetic and inspiration,” Abe tells BoF. The line is said to be launched on March 19th, according to Elle.
