FASHION REPETITION: MANSUR GAVRIEL BUCKET BAG
When Celine’s trapeze bag hit the racks, we figured there would be at least a small grace period before another bag trend would buy out the fashion sphere. Shortly after, Mansur Gavriel’s bucket bag flooded the scene. The Mansur Gavriel bucket bag were swept off the racks instantly when it debuted last summer; it had been wait-listed after being listed on Net-A-Porter, Need Supply Co., and Steven Alan.
Mansur Gavriel surely did not invent the classic drawstring bucket bag, but the minimalism and simplicity behind his construction surely made it the “It bag of 2014.” Luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Alexander Wang, Chanel and Saint Laurent all have their own signature versions. Eventually affordable brands such as Kelsi Dagger, Madewell, Baggu joined the bucket bag game. Though the surge of Mansur Gavriel lookalikes are becoming more and more evident as its slightly boxy shape, flat strap and knotted drawstring seemed to attract the most purchasers than the average bucket bag design. It’s no surprise that the fast retailers had to have a piece of the pie as well, here is Forever 21’s version that went for $29.90 compared to Gavriel’s Leather Bucket Bag that retails at $495. Something about red linings or red bottoms that tend to steal hearts, huh?
Before anyone can claim unoriginality and title one as a knockoff, we must analyze how copycats come to be. An unoriginal design simply lacks creativity and pulls an idea from an existing bag but between this Michael Kors Miranda bag and the Mansur Gavriel bucket bag – which would you pick, based on your own personal preference?
