A VOICE TO BE RECKONED WITH – EMMA WATSON
Emma Watson, most commonly known for her role as Hermione Granger in the ever popular magical children’s movie series (and adults too…let’s be honest) Harry Potter, has come into her own. Shying away from her role as the Muggle-born hard-headed, and often times quiet character in the movie series, Watson has been making strides in the fashion industry as an ambassador for gender equality.
Watson first made headlines on the topic of equality earlier this year in March when the young actress participated in a Facebook Q&A, on behalf of her year-old #HeForShe campaign that addressed a multitude of global women’s issues. Upon release, Watson was immediately targeted for discussing the importance of equality and was threatened with a nude photo release (a photo that Watson said failed to exist). “The minute I stepped up and talked about women’s rights I was immediately threatened,” the actress commented. “Within less than 12 hours I was receiving threats.”
Instead of backing down, Watson used the threats and negativity as fuel to continue her campaign. In her most recent video, Watson targets specific issues within the fashion industry using cameo interviews with famous designers to further promote her voice. “I want to get this conversation, this dialogue happening specifically within the fashion industry to ask the leading voices about gender equality,” Watson says in her video. Stella McCartney, one of the designers featured states “I think the fashion industry has a very big role to play. It has a huge voice and the voice can be adapted. We need to give a better message to women of all ages, all sizes and all nationalities. We need to allow women to feel comfortable in who they are.” Some other featured designers include Jonathan Saunders and Erdem Moralioglu.
On a separate more ironic note, in a recent interview with Vogue UK, the 25-year-old actress and UN Goodwill Ambassador speaks about her breakup with Matthew Janney last year dubbing it a “horrendous time.” This time, instead of vocalizing her opinion, Watson opted for a week-long vow of silence at a private facility in Canada’s Rocky Mountains. Commenting on her breakup and decision Watson stated, “I felt really uncomfortable. Even before my relationship ended, I went on a silent retreat, because I really wanted to figure out how to be at home with myself.”
