FASHION WEEK: 8 ESSENTIALS FOR SURVIVING NYFW
Surviving New York Fashion Week is a test of wit, time management, and haste. Naturally, a fashionista/o should be groomed properly (chipped nails and stained clothes are frowned upon) and be able to schedule and delegate important events; but in the madness there are some slip-ups, we’ve drafted 8 tips to help you manage precious time. To stay one step ahead in the most jam-packed cavalcade of shows, after parties, and rendezvouses in seven days, consider these essentials, compiled to help keep your concentration active and shave off minutes that could be used in a cab.
1. LEAVE THE CABLES
Consider ditching the Apple Lightening cable and invest in a portable charger case, or charger box. Not only will it be useful after the week, it would save you from the scavenger hunt looking for an outlet – when you really should be gunning for a decent seat.
2. HAVE YOUR CAR READY
Coordinate with your guest, or your schedule, and have a car waiting for you as soon as you apply the last mascara stroke. Although cabs are one of the quintessential pièce de résistance of NYFW, you’ll have as much luck catching one during these days as a suit would during rush hours. Have a car service number available as a back-up, or even car service apps, like Lyft or Über, set.
3. TRAVEL-SIZE YOUR GLOW
Running around venues and chasing after cars will leave you heaving and, almost 100%, sweating; touch-ups are not an option, they are necessary. Bring your absolute must-have beauty products to re-mystify your healthy (not dripping) glow. Try matte-finishing spray or oil-absorbing sheets, so you don’t have to reapply your morning’s work of make-up. Don’t forget to pack your basics like eyeliner, lipstick, and/or blush. Work with what you have, and if necessary buy travel size tubes so you’re not lugging a 6 oz. bottle of toner.
4. PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT
Mingling and chatting with your fellow fashionistas is one important aspect, but following up with them is what keeps your connections and conversations fresh. Keep yourself in the loop; never forget your business cards. Saving someone’s phone number isn’t very memorable in a sea of contacts. This is also an opportunity to show off your aesthetic when you hand them a double-ply “pale nimbus (and watermarked!)” beauty.
5. SHIELD YOUR FEET
I acquaint myself with Dr. Scholl’s every season without fail. Your most important assets during this week isn’t only your 6-inch Manolo Blahniks, but the piggies stuffed inside of them. Prepare for the worst: layer some gel insoles so you’re not fatigued early in the game. Before you squeeze into those pointed-toe shoes, stick on some padded bandages on your toes so you’re not stuck with blisters (or even corns!) and calluses post-NYFW. It’s too early to tap out, you have an after-party to head to.
6. PACK A SNACK
Don’t keel over before the first look breaks the runway. Keep yourself hydrated and full so you’re not over-stimulated and overexerted with the constant banter, flashing lights, and tippy-toeing to catch Xiao Wen Ju walk. Pack a small stash of almonds, dried fruit, and granola before you leave. Stay off salty snacks or sugary carbonated drinks that leave you lazy and bloated. Add some Vitamin-C, like oranges or add lemon to your water, so the stress doesn’t leave you bed-ridden!
7. PREPARE FOR STAINS
The scout’s rule is to always be ready. Dashing with a cup of coffee in hand sounds silly, but it is actually very universal. Fingers crossed that you’re not wearing a white top or dress, but if you are: bring a stain remover with you. Tide-to-go sticks or the old maiden’s secret, club soda, would be a wise investment. Stay away from wetting your blouses with water for it will set the stain!
8. REMAIN SANE
Although all you can think about now is fashion week and your packed schedule, have a meal with someone who isn’t as engrossed as you are in this jungle. Leave some leeway for you to unwind and focus on different aspects on your life like your personal social life! Meaningful conversation will lessen your load and help you breathe easier. Youre not on your own running with the bulls, someone is on your side!
