FASHION & STYLE: CHANEL NO. 5 GETS ANOTHER BAZ LUHRMANN COMMERCIAL
In 2004, Baz Luhrmann directed his Moulin Rouge! star Nicole Kidman in an opulent commercial short film promoting Chanel’s standard No. 5 fragrance. Now he’s at it again, but this time in a short titled “The One That I Want” featuring Gisele Bündchen.
The mini film opens with Bündchen surfing against the strains of a sultry, romantic cover of hit song “You’re the One That I Want” from 1978 film, Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. Bündchen is watched from a beachside mansion by her stunning lover, played by Dutch actor Michiel Ruisman, and appears to have it all until he decides to leave her. She returns to a busy life as a mother and model, but the question remaining is whether she will leave it all to pursue her true love.
The production is typical of Chanel’s decade of star-studded theatrical advertising, which numbers an array of films promoting everything from ready-to-wear resort collections to fragrances. Their dreamlike epic backdrops always bring their narratives back to the romance and devotion to love that characterize the Chanel brand.
Just released today, “The One That I Want” presents Bündchen as the embodiment of Chanel’s woman of today: a hybrid of powerhouse and dreamer who can still have it all…provided her lover is by her side.
