FASHION LAW: DUALSTAR ENTERTAINMENT IN HIGH HEAT
Like many previous intern lawsuits of misclassified treatment and unfair wages—or no wages at all—the infamous Olsen twin duo is guilty. The lead plaintiff is former employee Shahista Lalani who is charging the Olsen twins’ with a class-action lawsuit against their founded company Dualstar. Claiming overworked hours and unfair treatment, a group of 40 current and former interns are backing up Lalani against Dualstar Entertainment Group.
The lawsuit claims the plaintiffs were subject to 50-hour work weeks, and performing delegated tasks as paid employees; therefore, classifying them as exempt from minimum wage legislation. Lalani worked for The Row for five full months, between May to September 2012, laboring strenuous hours causing her to suffer dehydration on 10PM work days. Although Lalani is not targeting the Oslen Twins herself, she has mentioned several times over the head of design was the main culprit.
“You’re like an employee, except you’re not getting paid. They’re kind of mean to you. Other interns have cried. I’d see a lot of kids crying doing coffee runs, photocopying stuff.” The Olsen Twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen claim they are unaware of these claims.
