FASHION NEWS: COSMOPOLITAN’S MOVE BEHIND THE BLINDERS
Cosmopolitan, one of Hearst’s legendary signatures, has been moved behind the blinders with pornography magazines in Rite-Aid drugstores and several east coast grocery chains; Food Lion and Hannaford to name a few. Who’s the ringleader in this operation? None other than Hearst’s very own grand-daughter, Victoria Hearst. A descendent of founder William Randolph Hearst, Victoria Hearst has been campaigning to place the magazine behind newsstand blinders where pornography is exclusively sold.
She and the National Center of Sexual Exploitation (NCSE) see the reassignment of Cosmopolitan’s into the adult section in Rite Aid’s, which has over 4,500 stores in 31 states, as a victory. Victoria Hearst believes that the magazine has “glorification and desensitization of porn and sexual violence,” and has fought to place warning wrapping and labels on for several years launching a support website: EndSexualExploitation.org/Cosmo.
In April, Hearst says the move is not to end Cosmopolitan or censor the content, but just to categorize it the way it should be. At its bare bones, Cosmo contains adult content (I.e. “Hot Summer Sex”; “Crazy Hot Sex Moves”) and should not be casually displayed for minors to grab a hold of.
Cosmopolitan made this comment:
“Cosmopolitan is the most successful global media brand for young women, publishing 60 editions in 79 countries and 32 languages. Its award-winning content is produced for adults by leading female journalists. We are proud of all that the brand has achieved for women around the world in the areas of health, relationships, career, politics, equality and social issues.”
Some can say Cosmo has made waves for women to explore sexuality openly, but it is also clear that their sexual content is almost exclusively heteronormative. Like other “adult lifestyle” magazines, Cosmo does offer other content like beauty and fashion but its reputation centers around sex. So should Cosmo be placed with the general lifestyle sections or should it be with the Playboy’s?
