Business of Fashion: Amazon to Roll-out Clothing Line
E-commerce giant and global retail titan, Amazon, is now looking to expand into the clothing arena by means of creating their own-label brand. Who said Amazon couldn’t have and do it all?!
Amazon is rumored to be discussing this undertaking with former Marks & Spencer (M&S) womenswear boss Frances Russell, who left M&S last year. Amazon is no stranger to selling third party branded clothing (dated back to 2002), however; this will be Amazon’s first attempt at branding its own clothing to sell via its own site.
This addition to the Seattle-based e-commerce company is a huge move by Jeff Bezos in his continued effort to challenge traditional brick-and-mortar retailers.
It is unclear at this time what Ms. Russell’s title with Amazon will be and whether or not she will be based in the UK or the US. The recruitment of Ms. Russell is arguably the most “high-profile appointment [Amazon] has made in its fashion business to date.” In January, Amazon reported a third straight quarterly profit.
